Level 1 Charging •	What it is: Uses a standard 120V household outlet (no installation required). •	Charging time: Up to 24 hours for a fully electric vehicle (EV) and around 12 hours for a plug-in hybrid. •	Ideal for: Drivers covering less than 100 km per day. Level 2 Charging •	What it is: Requires a 240V outlet, similar to those used for dryers or ovens. •	Charging time: Typically, under 8 hours for EVs and about 6 hours for plug-in hybrids, depending on the model. •	Installation: May require electrical p

Key Considerations for EV Charger Installation

Hire a Licensed Electrical Contractor

All EV chargers must be installed by a Licensed Electrical Contractor in compliance with the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. Always verify the credentials of your contractor. For more information about hiring a licensed electrical contractor or to find a licensed electrical contractor near you, please visit: Working with General Contractors - ESA

Obtain a Permit

Ensure your contractor obtains a permit from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA) before starting any installation work. Get information and apply for a permit using the forms available on the ESA website

Use Certified Equipment

Confirm that all equipment is certified for use in Canada by a nationally recognized certification agency such as CSA, cUL, or cETL, or displays other certification marks approved by the ESA. A list of ESA approved certification marks is available here.

Determine NT Power involvement
  • Level 1: No utility involvement required.
  • Level 2: Installation must be completed by a licensed electrical contractor and requires a permit from the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). If service panel upgrades are necessary, please submit a Service Request through Service Requests | NT Power.
  • Level 3: Involves high-voltage equipment. Requires a new service connection. Residential or business installations must submit an EVSE Service Request through Service Requests | NT Power.
